Teaching The RCF Exam Courses

roger_bleaney_rcf_exams_fullAt the April meeting of the Verulam Amateur Radio Club the outgoing Training Co-ordinator, Roger Bleaney (M0RBK), and the new Training Co-ordinator, Greg Beacher (M0PPG), presented a summary of teaching needs for the past, present and future.

Roger gave an overview of his experiences with the conclusion that, at all levels, there was a need for consolidation of mathematical skills and particularly for the Advanced Course students there was a requirement for more exemplar exam questions and suitable background reading.

m0ppgGreg is using his IT skills to develop interactive web-seminar courses supported as needed by classroom based training.  He has been very successful with his first Foundation group and all his students are enjoying their new M6 call signs. He plans to involve more club members in the development of illustrative slides and appropriate teaching materials.

Following a robust discussion it was evident that all the club members felt that their learning experiences would have been enhanced by having access to a mentor and future groups would benefit from a mixture of the on-line approach and formal tutorials.

Both Roger and Greg emphasised to the group that a lot of the success with the training they have provided should be attributed to the excellent support offered by Carol Meredith at the RSGB Exams Office, both in terms of interpreting the syllabus and administering the exams.
